As the August 16 2025 bye election for Ibadan North federal constituency approaches, the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has thrown their weight behind the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Fola Oyekunle popularly known as Don.

The NUP made their position known at an interactive meeting between the PDP candidate and NUP members in Ibadan North local government held at the council’s Secretariat, Agodi-gate yesterday.

Speaking on behalf of the NUP members, the state Secretary of NUP, Comrade Ricketts Olasupo disclosed that while the NUP is apolitical, their decision to support Hon. Oyekunle was born out of the fact that the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde has performed excellently well especially on the issues of welfare of workers and pensioners alike in the state.

Com. Ricketts who is also the branch chairman Ibadan North NUP, retired local government staff wing further hinted that their decision is to demonstrate their solidarity for the governor and to show their gratitude to him.

He further disclosed that the NUP will not only work to ensure victory for the PDP candidate in the forthcoming bye election but will also support whoever he presents as his successor in the 2027 gubernatorial election and his personal future political ambition.

He solicited the support of the electorates in the Ibadan North federal constituency for the PDP candidate in the upcoming bye election.

While presenting the candidate for the NUP members in attendance, the Chairman of Local Government Staff Pension Board, Hon. Hon. Akeem Ademola Ige appreciated the NUP Oyo State for the support they have been given to Engr. Seyi Makinde led administration.

He noted that Governor Makinde and the PDP has carefully selected Hon. Oyekunle who was once a lawmaker in the Oyo State House of Assembly to give the people of the said federal constituency a chance to choose progress and people-focused leadership for them to enjoy like other federal constituencies being controlled by the PDP in the state.

He added that the PDP candidate has a track record of service, humility, and commitment to development and is ready to bring real solutions to the constituency if elected.

Also in attendance at the meeting was the Executive Chairman of Ibadan North local government, Hon. Seun Olufade who also solicited support for the party’s candidate in the upcoming election.
