Politics in Africa has, unfortunately, become a breeding ground for sycophancy and the use of stooges to stir unnecessary uproar within the polity. This unbecoming attitude has found acceptance in our modern-day politics, thereby eroding the values that once defined political engagement.
From my political experience and practical observation, this rigmarole has eaten deep into the fabric of political youth like a cankerworm. While politics is indeed local, that should never be an excuse to become insolent or uncouth.
Politics demands boldness—a quality necessary to acquire influence and secure dividends for one’s constituency. However, boldness should never be mistaken for rudeness or disrespect, especially towards elders and mentors in the political circle. Such confusion of values reflects a gross misunderstanding of political maturity and discipline.
In politics, leadership is not determined by age or seniority but by credibility, carriage, courage, and commitment. Years of experience without tangible achievements or network amount to nothing. Political relevance is not measured by longevity but by impact, integrity, and influence.
Qualification remains a critical prerequisite for political participation. While politics welcomes both the educated elite and market men and women, this inclusivity does not mean all participants occupy the same political echelon. Distinction in knowledge, experience, and understanding will always set people apart.
